After you pick up your rental car at the Airport, you will exit the airport and head east toward Federal Highway 307.  You will bear right and merge onto the Federal Highway 307.  Heading basically south you will travel approximately 80 miles on a 4 lane divided highway all the way to Tulum .  As you enter Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen you will see service roads on the side of the main highway which is in the middle.  If you accidentally get off on the service roads, don’t worry you will eventually be able to get back on the main road on the other side of town.  It is illegal to switch between the service road and the main road in the middle of town, so don’t.  As you approach Playa del Carmen, you will see the speed limit drop down to 80km/hr.  Make sure you pay attention these signs are not miles per hour.  The police recently acquired speed guns and are using them and will stop you if you are speeding.

Tulum Beach House Location

As you approach Tulum, you will see the entrance to the Tulum Ruins and you will eventually get to the 2nd stoplight in Tulum.  We may meet you at the San Francisco Grocery store (See Map) and lead you out to the house.  If you decide to go directly to the beach house turn left at this intersection to go to the Beach Road.  (Turning right will take you to Coba.)  After turning left, drive 3.2 km till the road ends at a T-intersection where you will make a right turn and go south along the beach road.  Drive 3.4km to the house.  On the way, you will pass through the small village of Punta Piedra.  There are several restaurants here.  Slow down because there are several speed bumps called “topes”.  We are located between Playa Azul and Ana y Jose HOTEL.  There is a new Ana y Jose Beach Club...we are past that, keep going till you see the blue driveway markers on your left pictured below.

Continuing down the beach road you will pass several beach properties and eventfully see the entrance to Casa Tranquillo.  Shown Here:

If you get to Anna y Jose’s Resort, you have gone too far.  Turn in between the two cement posts and drive up to the house where someone will meet you and assist you check you in.

SUGGESTIONS:

  • Don’t drive at night if you can avoid it  If you must slow down, be careful pulling over onto the shoulder because many Mexican workers wait for rides, walk along the road, or ride on bicycles on the shoulders.
  • Turning left or passing someone turning left is a dangerous situation.  Some drivers will pull over to the right and wait for road to clear and others will sit in the road and wait to turn with their signal flashing.
  • Some drivers will turn on their left turn signal as an indication they are driving slow and they think it is safe for you to pass.  If they are slowing down and have their signal on then maybe they are turning.  Be careful.
  • When vehicles break down along the road, the drivers will collect rocks and tree limbs from the side of the road and put them behind their vehicle to prevent you from hitting them.  So debris in the roadway could be a sign of a disabled vehicle ahead.
  • We always fill our gas tank when we get below half a tank.  There is only one brand of gas and prices are fixed so there is no advantage to shop around.  The national gas brand is PEMEX and the stations are all along the Federal Highway 307.  If you take off to other destinations there are fewer stations.  Sometimes they run out of gas or there are long lines, so be prepared.
